What Is Less Than Truckload Shipping (LTL)?

Less Than Truckload (LTL) refers to the transport of small to large that don’t require the use of a full truck. The advantage of using LTL transport services is that you only pay for the space you occupy, sharing the cost and space in the vehicle with other shippers. LTL shipping is ideal for businesses who have freight under 15,000 pounds and do not require a full trailer. Not to mention, this shipping method is useful for clients who are looking to maximize cost savings by sharing a truck with fellow industry professionals.

When you choose Just Ship It Logistics, you can be sure that all your LTL shipping will be handled smoothly and professionally by our reputable team. We prioritize industry knowledge and continuously stay up to date on ways to make your freight experience as perfect as possible.

How It Works

Pick Up Your Order

After finishing the daily collection, our trusted LTL freight operator takes the shipments to a terminal where the vehicles are unloaded.

Have It Shipped Out

Each shipment is then examined and weighed. The individual shipment is loaded onto an outbound vehicle which contains shipments from other customers from the same geographic area.

Have It Delivered To You

The outbound shipments are trucked to appropriate regional terminals, where they are unloaded. The shipments are sorted and placed on local vehicles for delivery to its final destination.

When LTL Makes Sense and When It Doesn’t

LTL isn’t always the cheapest answer. Knowing where the line falls saves money and prevents surprise costs.

LTL Services

LTL is the right choice when

  • You’re moving roughly 1 to 6 pallets
  • Your freight is palletized and stackable
  • You can accommodate a longer, less exact delivery window
  • You ship too little to negotiate direct carrier contracts

Consider a full truckload or another mode when

  • Your freight fills more than about half a trailer at that point full truckload can cost the same or less
  • The freight is fragile or high-value, where extra handling raises damage risk
  • Delivery is strictly time-sensitive
  • The freight is long, oversized, or non-stackable, which draws heavy LTL surcharges

The honest version: LTL trades speed and handling for price. If your priority is the lowest cost on a standard palletized shipment, it wins. If your priority is speed or minimal handling, weigh the alternatives.

LTL Shipping Rates in Canada. What Affects Your Cost

LTL rates aren’t a single number, they’re built from several factors, and understanding them is the difference between an accurate quote and a surprise invoice. The main drivers are weight, dimensions, freight class, distance, and any accessorial services your shipment needs.

How LTL Pricing Works

Carriers calculate an LTL rate from a combination of:

  • Weight and density – heavier, denser freight generally costs less per pound, because it uses trailer space efficiently
  • Freight class –  a standardized 50 – 500 rating based mainly on density; lower class means lower cost (explained below)
  • Distance and lane – longer hauls and less-travelled lanes cost more
  • Fuel surcharge – a percentage that moves with diesel prices
  • Accessorials – extra services like liftgate or residential delivery, added on top of the base rate

The single biggest source of unexpected charges is a mismatch between what you declared and what the carrier measures. Give exact weight and dimensions and the quote holds; estimate them and the carrier’s re-weigh can change the final bill.

Why Carriers Won’t Give Small Shippers Their Best Rates

Here’s the part carriers don’t advertise: their best pricing is reserved for shippers who commit to large, consistent annual volume.

As a rule of thumb across the industry, a carrier won’t negotiate a meaningful discount unless you can guarantee a substantial book of business a year, a threshold most small and mid-sized shippers can’t reach on their own.

Below that line, you pay list rates. This is exactly why the no volume commitment model matters: a broker aggregates many shippers’ freight into one large book, then passes the negotiated pricing down to shippers who could never command it individually. You get volume-based rates without the volume commitment.

The mechanism, plainly: carriers reward committed volume. A broker pools your freight with everyone else’s, reaches the volume that unlocks better rates, and you access that pricing on a single pallet. No contract, no minimum.

Cross-Border LTL Shipping: Canada to the USA

LTL freight crosses the Canada – US border every day, and it’s one of the most common and most misunderstood parts of the service. The freight itself moves the same way; what changes is customs, documentation, and timing.

Just Ship It Logistics arranges cross-border LTL in both directions, with customs handling coordinated alongside the freight so you’re not managing two separate processes. For full cross-border service across all modes, see our Cross-Border Freight Shipping page, and our Customs Brokerage service.

What Happens to Consolidated Freight at the Border

Here’s what most shippers don’t realize about cross-border LTL: your freight shares a trailer with several other shippers’ goods, and each shipment needs its own customs clearance. If one other shipper on that trailer has incorrect or missing paperwork, the whole trailer can be held at the border including your freight, even when your documents are perfect.

This is the single strongest reason to move cross-border LTL through a broker rather than booking directly. When someone is coordinating the clearance and watching the paperwork on your shipment, you’re not exposed to another shipper’s mistake sitting three pallets over. Getting the documentation right, commercial invoice, the correct classification, and a clean bill of lading — is what keeps consolidated freight moving. For freight entering Canada, carriers and brokers must transmit advance cargo data to the CBSA before arrival, and importers can use the Pre-Arrival Review System (PARS) to have goods reviewed and released faster at the border.

Industries We Serve with Less Than Truckload Shipping

LTL is the practical choice for businesses that ship regularly, but in quantities too small to fill a trailer. At Just Ship It Logistics, we move LTL freight most often for:

  • Manufacturing – parts, components, and finished goods moving in palletized quantities on predictable lanes.
  • Retail & wholesale – store and distribution replenishment, a few skids at a time, often on recurring cross-border routes.
  • Agriculture – packaged supplies and inputs headed to farms and rural operations, where limited-access delivery is common.
  • Construction – materials, fixtures, and site supplies delivered in skid quantities to job sites.
  • E-commerce & online retail – bulk or oversized orders too big for parcel, like furniture, appliances, and multi-item pallets.
  • Food & beverage – packaged, shelf-stable goods to stores and distributors: dry goods, canned, and bottled products.
  • Automotive & auto parts – aftermarket parts, components, and accessories in palletized quantities.
  • Industrial & MRO supplies – maintenance, repair, and operations goods, from tools and fasteners to equipment parts.

LTL Shipping FAQs

For partial loads, yes LTL is almost always cheaper because you split the trailer cost with other shippers instead of paying for the whole truck. But once your freight fills more than roughly half a trailer, full truckload can cost the same or less, and it's faster.

LTL cost depends on weight, dimensions, freight class, distance, and any accessorial services. There's no flat rate; a few pallets on a short regional lane costs far less than the same freight moving coast-to-coast. The most accurate way to know is a quote based on exact measurements.

The most common causes are inaccurate weight, dimensions, or freight class at booking, or accessorial charges (like liftgate or residential delivery) that weren't identified upfront. Carriers re-weigh and re-measure freight, then re-rate it if declarations don't match. Accurate details at booking prevent almost all of these.

An over-length surcharge is an added fee for freight beyond a set length; thresholds vary by carrier but often begin around 12 feet. Long freight ties up disproportionate trailer space and is harder to handle, so carriers price it accordingly, especially when capacity is tight.
